Frame-built, carved-soundboard and fully carved guzheng: what differs?
These terms describe construction. Compare the exact model, specifications and playing experience rather than treating construction as a quality ranking.
Tongyun describes several construction approaches. A frame-built guzheng has a frame assembled with panels. A carved-soundboard model, called mianwa in the Chinese materials, uses a carved soundboard combined with the instrument’s structure. A fully carved model uses a resonating cavity carved from a single piece of wood.
These terms explain how an instrument is made. They do not by themselves determine whether it suits a player. Compare the exact specifications, configuration and playing experience. Price alone does not identify construction, and fully carved construction should not automatically be ranked above the other approaches.
For example, the available construction document and catalogue facts identify Yun Zhi He W7698DY as a carved-soundboard model. It should not be described as fully carved merely because it belongs to a carved-instrument category. Check the detailed construction description when browsing catalogue categories.
Read the catalogue label “semi-hollow” alongside the carved-soundboard description for each model; the category name alone does not establish its exact construction.
Does frame-built mean entry-level? No. Construction and the intended positioning of an individual model are separate matters.
Is Yun Zhi He fully carved? The reviewed materials identify W7698DY as carved-soundboard construction; confirm the exact configuration in your quotation before purchasing.
